RECOVERY Assistance Dogs

Narrow divider

RECOVERY Assistance Dogs was set up in 2004 by Survivors of Mental Health problems. We help Survivors across the UK recover from mental health problems through non-invasive support with highly-trained RAD Dogs.

We provide free dog training classes, to teach dogs how to help protect their owners from anxiety, loneliness and panic attacks. We have found that the RECOVERY dogs also help with social isolation, exercise and protection.

How does your organisation contribute to preventing suicide and supporting those affected by it?

We believe that dogs can be the best 'listeners' and can bring a lovely sense of peace. It is the companionship that dogs bring us that helps us to keep stable and focused on the present. One of our RECOVERY Assistance Dogs, Milli has just won a PDSA Commendation for Animal Devotion Award for saving her owner's life & preventing suicide. Our vision at RECOVERY Assistance Dogs is to help create a community that has sustainable, coordinated, and collaborative approaches to suicide awareness, prevention & intervention.

At RAD we are also planning to start a new Project SOS (Survivors of Suicide) looking at and learning from: Suicidal thoughts and suicidal attempts and how RECOVERY Assistance dogs can help. We will also run therapeutic groups. We have raised over £8,000 for the SOS (Survivors of Suicide) Project. We pledge with the money raised that we will help people to survive suicide and help improve their mental health.

What are your current priorities?

Our priority is our SOS Project to help survivors of self-harm, eating disorders or suicide. We will be undertaking the Zero Suicide Alliance Training and incorporating suicide safety planning. We want to raise awareness and help those who are struggling with mental health.
